Welcome to the August issue of the Defensive Edge/SLR15 Rifles Newsletter!

The spring and summer months have been busy for our staff and alumni, and we've had the opportunity to meet many new students and renew acquaintances with everyone, as we've traveled throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, South Dakota, Colorado, Ohio and Texas.

We have many upcoming training courses this fall in Colorado, Kansas, Wisconsin, Texas, Minnesota, and South Dakota.

Please take a few moments to review the latest product information and events from Defensive Edge.

As summer is coming to a close, remember there are many opportunities for training this summer, and train for the annual 5-Gun Match scheduled for October 7th.

 Are you ready?

SLR15 Commander Rifle The Annual Defensive Edge Alumni 5-Gun event is scheduled for October 7, 2006 at the Princeton range.

The Defensive Edge 5-gun event will consist of the following disciplines: Autopistol, Revolver, Shotgun, Carbine, and Precision Rifle. This range day will be held in all weather conditions, so be prepared.

2006 Prizes:
*SLR15 Commander (for the 5-gun Overall Champion)
*SLR15 Classic 16

These are a few of my thoughts on modern self defense and training principles.

For those of you that know me and some of my background, know that I have trained in the Japanese Arts since I was a small child. I bring many of these principles to our doctrine through body physics and mechanics, also in the spiritual aspect and thought.
You will see that I focus lots of body mechanics and physics on shooting foundations of how things work and recoil management. I was always taught that weapons are extensions of your arms and legs, so I view modern day self defense tools as extensions of the limbs.

You will also see that I am a firm believer in consistent training. Training means that one should seek out training knowledge from someone who has something to teach, but training also means practice of what you already know.

Sully's thoughts on Funakoshi Sensei's Dojo Kun - and the application to tactics and training

The Dojo Kun contains five "rules of the Dojo". This month I will share my thoughts on the first "kun":

1. Hitotsu! Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto.

Seek Perfection of Character Character

This means that the art of karate is more than just physical. All beginners, especially the young, should be taught the importance of character building through discipline and rigorous training.

For the beginner, the character building process begins with perfecting techniques through repetition. The spirit to fight will be achieved as one gains more confidence through development of stronger techniques. Train to bring out the spirit, not only to fight but to overcome personal problems especially in times of sickness, domestic crisis or business problems.

It is a long path to develop these spiritual values but once the concept is understood and experienced it will provide a lifetime benefit of inner strength and peace.
